Lake Wawasee Emergent Vegetation Survey In Ecozone Areas Of Johnson And Conklin Bay – 2008

Executive Summary

V3 was contracted by the Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation (WACF) to complete Tier II aquatic vegetation sampling and ecozone vegetation surveying in Johnson and Conklin Bay.  This study was funded in part by the Lake and River Enhancement fund (LARE) as part of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Division of Fish and Wildlife which was obtained by the WACF.

Wawasee Area Watershed Management Plan Elkhart, Kosciusko, and Noble Counties, Indiana

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Wawasee Area Watershed encompasses approximately 25,000 acres in southwestern Noble and Northeastern Kosciusko Counties. The watershed lies in the headwaters of the Elkhart River basin. The watershed contains more than 25 lakes and many thousands of feet of streams. With funding from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Fish and Wildlife through the Lake and River Enhancement grant program the Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation (WACF) initiated the development of a watershed management plan in an effort to improve water quality in the lake and streams in the Wawasee Area Watershed.

The following report outlines a long-term vegetation management strategy for Lake Wawasee. Aquatic Weed Control was contracted by the Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation to conduct aquatic vegetation surveys and propose a lake management plan based on the results of the surveys. Water-Table Characteristics In The Lake Wawasee Basin And Vicinity

Introduction
Lake Wawasee is the largest natural lake in Indiana.  The lake is late Wisconsin age and occupies a massive ice-block depression in the classic interlobate area that lay between the Saginaw and Erie Lobes.  The lake is located in northeastern Kosciusko County, but a large part of the watershed is located in southwestern Noble County.

REVISED ANNUAL MEETING PRESENTATION

For the health and safety of everyone, the WACF Board of Directors has cancelled the public meeting of the WACF *ANNUAL LAKE CELEBRATION & BRUNCH, *scheduled for Saturday, July 25th, 10:30 AM at the WACF Education Center.
In its place, the Board of Directors will attend the WACF ANNUAL MEETING, on Saturday, July 25, in-person, and socially-distanced, at the Ruddell Pavilion and the Jorgensen Amphitheater at the WACF Center. Board members and staff may also attend remotely.
The agenda for the Annual Meeting will include: a presentation by Dr. Jerry Sweeten, Ecosystems Connections Institute, on initial research and findings from the first year of the Wawasee Inlets Nutrient Study (WINS), the WACF Cattail Awards, recognizing exceptional commitment to the
enhancement of water quality in the Wawasee Area Watershed, and a salute to WACF volunteers.
Highlights of the Annual Meeting will be made available via remote
live-streaming or on the WACF YouTube Channel. Details on internet access of the meeting will be posted on www.wacf.com and WACF Facebook page.

Key WACF Acquisition

After a full 20 years of negotiations with the property owner, WACF has acquired what is arguably their most important property. The Turkey Creek Inlet Preserve (across from Runaway Bay) filters the approximately 43% of water flowing into Lake Wawasee. Please take a few minutes to listen to Tom Yoder explain the importance of this property to Lake Wawasee.
