Lake Wawasee and Turkey Creek Wetland Sediment Analysis: The Rest of the Story, 2024 |
Explore internal phosphorus loading in Lake Wawasee, Turkey Creek Wetlands, Knapp Lake, Gordy Lake and Village Lake |
Quantifies bioavailable vs. bound phosphorus in studied areas. Provides additional insight into possible remediation/restoration strategies for the lakes and wetlands. |
National Water Quality Initiative (NWQI) 2023-2025+ |
Provide financial incentive for Wawasee Area Watershed farmers to implement Best Management Practices to reduce nutrients and sediment |
NWQI Readiness Report largely replaces 2007 Watershed Management Plan. Initiates “long game” of relationship building with farmers and influencing change. |
2022 DNR Fish Survey in Lake Wawasee |
Survey of Northern Pike, Crappie, Black Bass, and general status and trends survey. The lake was mapped for contour as well |
Wawasee has quality fishing for Northern Pike, Black Crappie, and Bass. Status and trends survey concluded that quality fishing opportunities exist for multiple species. Bluegill are plentiful however there are not as many large fish. Largemouth Bass and Yellow Perch fishing are a focus for many anglers. |
Watershed Inlets Nutrients Study 2019-2023 |
Establish baseline for future water quality improvement efforts to reduce nutrients and sediment |
Statistically sound measurement of nutrients and sediment entering, leaving, and staying in the lake. Demonstrated annual variability and replaced Watershed Management Plan goals with desired quantifiable load reductions. |
2018 Hot Spot Study |
Identify critical areas upstream and recommend Best Management Practices |
Indentified 99 issues and 29 Hot Spots in various subwatersheds. Challenge: how to prioritize. |
2014 Lake Wawasee and Syracuse Lake Aquatic Vegetation Management Plan Update (Aquatic Weed Control) |
Updated 2005 management plan subsequent to infestation of Starry Stonewort in 2009 |
Characterized the relative increases in Starry Stonewort on Wawasee and Syracuse and defined Starry Stonewort as highest treatment priority and proposed prioritizing highest use areas of lakes. |
2009 Lake Wawasee Aquatic Vegetation Management Plan Update (Aquatic Weed Control) |
Update Aquatic Vegetation Management Plan and include surveys of Ecozone Areas of Conklin Bay |
Tier II survey conducted to determine extent of exotic species (Eurasian Watermilfoil, Curly Leaf Pondweed, and Starry Stonewort) in Wawasee and to map plants in Ecozone areas. |
2008 Fish Management Report (Indiana DNR Div. of Fish and Wildlife) |
|
|
2007 Watershed Management Plan |
Identify watershed stressors and establish goals to address issues |
Set goals without any baseline. No monitoring strategy implemented. Did Board use this report as a roadmap? |
2005 Lake Wawasee Aquatic Vegetation Management Plan (Aquatic Weed Control) |
Outline long-term vegetation management strategy based on results of Tiers I and II surveys |
Management plan based on Indiana DNR management goals for Indiana public lakes. |
2003 Water Quality Summary Report (DLZ Corporation) |
Summarize all known water quality data for Lake Wawasee |
|
1996 Commonwealth Study |
Diagnostic study to identify issues and propose “cures” |
Water quality at the time deemed good. Identified need for sewers and Best Management Practices and some hot spots in watershed. |
1976 EPA Study |
Develop information on nutrient sources, concentrations and impact on selected lakes as basis for formulating coordinated management practices for non-point-source reduction and abatement |
